Thank God for Friday

Of course lots has happened since my post-Memorial Day post, but I'll just hit the highlights of thought since I cannot remember most of it.

Today is Ahmad Khan's 25th Birthday. He's an old fart, but should be some fun tonight. Excellent weekend to stay in town. Of course next weekend I'm in town too, I just have to go home for the bridal shower Sunday afternoon.

The World Cup has me enthralled. I watch lots of soccer every day and actually get excited about group play games not involving the US or Germany (although I am cheering for those teams with the roomie). Germany looks very good, but might be tested by England if they meet early in the playoff rounds. The US was easily the only bad team in their group of 4 after being dismissed 3-0 by Czech Republic. Italy did beat Ghana 2-0, but Ghana played TONS better than the US did. It will be quite a task tomorrow for the Americans to get the necessary win against Italy...but I'll hold out hope until they take the pitch. Even if they lose and get knocked out (after playing against Ghana in a then-meaningless game)...I'm still enthralled by the other teams of the World Cup. Gasp...I might just be a soccer fan too.

Speaking of sports, I'm loving the NBA finals too. I've watched the playoffs which have been very rewarding, but the team I'm cheering for (Miami) has made a series of it and who knows they might just run Dallas off the court again in Game 5. I hope so.

The Reds are still in it in June, and actually led the division before their 5 game losing streak this week. As a true Reds fan...we'll see where they are next week lol.

Ben Rothlisburger deserved worse than he got. I mean I wish the guy no ill will and I cheered for the Steelers after they beat Indy last year, but c'mon. You don't wear a helmet and go face-first into a windshield of a car? That guy better stay lucky...but at least he paid the lip service of saying he will wear a helmet now. The fact that PA revoked the law is just simply absurd. Considering how they drive on I-70 across Ohio (the only cars I cannot keep up with basically), I guess they just don't value laws or safety as much as the restof us. If you've ever driven across that behemoth of a boring state, I guess you would understand.

On June 6 (6/6/06 for those living under a rock), I was walking up the street and I hear from a house porch above me..."yeah we tied the knot today." Given that our original date was 7/7/07, I had thought about how many goths would be rushing to the downtown courts to get married on this "historic" day. My thoughts from many months before were rewarded when I looked up on that porch and it was two of the most gothic people I've ever seen talking to some normal looking sun-touched friends. IT MADE MY WEEK! But then it gets better. The bride says in response to the congratulations,"yeah it's really historic because it only happens like, once every millenium." Well call me too smart, but an 06 actually happens every century...and her friends and groom did not say anything other than.."wow it really is monumental." If the original comment made my day, this follow-up about had me rolling up the street to get away before I could bust out laughing. People are dumb and predictable.

So I was browsing the internet today while working, and I think it would be awesome to be a bartender. Not for life (although I bet it's not a bad career), but just as a side job. Too bad I did not have these thoughts 2 years ago...as I might have been more likely to take the 2 week (or 1 week) course and jump into the scene here in Columbus. I certainly see advertisments asking for bartenders often enough. Even if I did not actually decide to become a bartender, I think it would be a fun class to take since it is cheap and a good life skill. Remember, I intend to have a bar at home in my dream house, which may or may not happen. But it would be nice to be able to have people over for drinks and discussion later on. And bartending skills beyond looking in my drink book I have now would be cool to have.

I think everything for the wedding is set, but I like keeping my distance at this point since it seems like the only thing happening is bickering between families and wedding party members. We should have around 200 at the ceremony and 170-175 at the reception, so that should be enough to actually get people to loosen up and dance a little bit. I hate weddings where nobody mingles, and so does Kelley so we set up our reception as an hors-d'oeurve engagement with seating only for about 100 people (assuming people will want to sit while waiting on us to come over while we do pictures at the church). I haven't really had the butterflies yet, but I figure the longer I wait the harder they will come on. Doesn't much matter, as I doubt anything could scare me away from the altar at this point. We've been through thick and thin...and we're still here.

I saw three Mormons with their white button-down shirts, black pants, and black nametags riding down the sidewalk on bikes today. I have a copy of the book of Mormon since I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, but I haven't been in the mood yet to read it all the way through. They are the most irritating people who accost you as you walk on campus. I blew them off the last time I saw them...but I usually like to mess with them when I have time to talk. What bothered me was that they always travel in packs (and apparently don't believe in cars), they are always guys (why?), and they are riding on bikes down the sidewalk. I think bikers shouldn't get to hold up cars on the highway AND run over people on sidewalks...but this happens every day around here. One or the other. My opinion like the law...they should be on the road. I can deal with them easier there since in a head on collision I win. At least they were all wearing helmets...so perhaps they don't have the same level of faith as Ben Rothlisburger that God will save them if they run into a car or pedestrian.

It felt so good to play tennis last night. I should never let myself lapse, as I am a pretty decent player when in practice (and I'm not even close to where I was in high school). I got the roomie down 4-1 last night before forgetting how to keep my passing shots in the court...dropping two breaks back and losing the set 4-6.

This weekend is the Pro Tour for teams in Charleston SC. I am cheering for the three teams who beat us for qualifications this past season (well not really for the sucky team from Chicago who we would beat 8-9 times out of 10) to make a good showing, and our playtest partners started 4-0 while the other two teams are 3-1 and 2-2. None out of contention, and our playtest buddies are doing very well, seeing the second day of a Pro Tour for sure at this point. I cannot help but be a little bitter though, since they are our playtest friends and we wouldbe playing the same set of decks as them and probably would be 4-0 or 3-1 right now. Maybe next year :-)

In other Magic news, I've put together the cards and decks I am keeping finally and am now sorting through the collection for rares to put up on ebay. What a task, but it's three and a half more plastic storage boxes to use for something else later on lol. I hope this frees up more time for poker and other things I want to do. Ah speaking of, I need to put a new entry on my poker blog for the live game we played. Maybe I'll go do that and stop filling this blog with useless thoughts.

One more: what the hell takes law professors so long to get grades in? A lot of graduating 3L's are complaining because one seminar is holding up their final transcripts, but our class is apparently the unlucky one. All the other sections (2/3 of the 1L class) now have all their grades in. Section 1/2...oh no. We just got our Contracts grade in which the final was 3 months ago today (obviously the last of the 3 sections), we are the only section without Constitutional Law grades and Property grades, and half of our section (since we were split) still has no Legislation grades while the other half doesn't have Legal Writing (all other sections of Legislation and Legal Writing are in). So we all have 2 grades (half of us Legislation and Contracts, the other half hae Legal Writing and Contracts), while the rest of the class has had their grades for over a week now. The registrar said all three of the classes I am waiting on (Legal Writing, Con Law, and Property) have been submitted as raw scores and are either currently being converted to the scale they use to grade us or are awaiting professor and dean approval before they are released. If we don't have all three of those grades by Wednesday...I'm going to throw a fit. Get it together people.
