Been a pretty easy week, as evidenced by yesterday. Started by working a little for Shipman and thinking up topics for the poor 1L's to write on. Then called Mom and had our necessary chat. Got the apology for hanging up on me, but lots of other stuff talked about. Not too much to bitch about, and she will back off the talking business pretty much forever since it is clear if it ever happens it will be on Kelley's terms. Then went to lunch with Everson and he asked if I minded going to a few stores...I had not been to Half Price Books and our other haunts in a while so we went. He definitely dropped quite a bit and ended up with a new PS2, 3 controllers, and 20 games. I bet I have 18-20 games for my Xbox and I've had that forever it seems. But most of the games he got are proven winners. Went back to his place and tried out some new games I had not played yet and chilled. Then went to Panini's to meet AK and figure out the weekend plans. Of course I ended up eating dinner there and hanging out with his friends most of the evening. Called Kelley...she cannot wait for me to come down. Hell next time I write we will be married.
Got news from Chicago Patent Law Interview Program in August. I got ten interviews out of the 35 firms I signed up for. Amazing! I'll be so busy those two days, but that's a good thing. Probably should have tried to pass the patent bar over this summer, but I doubt I'll regret it later if I get a job in patent law next summer as I suspect I will.
Going out again tonight in Marietta. What thrills!

Last Weekend: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Not to steal a title from my fellow blogger Villa, but it certainly fits my weekend.
THE GOOD
Shep came up Friday night as planned right after I got laundry done. We ended up eating some Taco Bell fourth meal and playing a World Cup. I had Iran and lost to England in the quarterfinals in overtime after beating USA in the Rd. of 16 in penalty kicks. Tom lost to Sweden in the round of 16, and Shep went on to avenge our losses and win the whole thing.
Saturday Tom and Shep went to pick up the ice, beer, and cigars for the nightcap and cleaned the place up while I relaxed and showered. Zach came up first at 3, followed by Daniel shortly thereafter. Of course Ahmad was late as usual, but Burton came in around the same time and we were off. Hooters was OK, good unhealthy food and good conversation to start the Bachelor Party. We also got to watch Argentina beat Mexico in the World Cup, which had a lot of trash talking in overtime (including continued bashing of America's team, EYEBROWS Reyna and BaLDEY Kasey Keller). Our night continued at Shadowbox Cabaret where we were one of 5 bachelor/bachelorette parties in attendance. The show was Best of 2006 and it was absolutely hellarious. I think everyone enjoyed the evening show and I am certain most of us will be back with girlfriends/wives/hookups in the future. Then it was back to the apartment for some poker, drinking and smoking. Everyone smoked one, and it was quite the atmosphere at the beginning. Poker was well played overall, and I think the first three people out lost on hands they definitely had the better percentage with when they pushed all in. Villa was the first out and he is the only player at the table I think is better than me, so his AA losing to KK of Daniel (who is the biggest lucksack still...go away beginner's luck) actually helped out. It took quite a while but eventually I knocked out Ahmad and fought with Daniel to get the chip lead. We got down to Tom, Shep, Daniel, and I and despite Shep and Tom being short stacks...they attacked Daniel and got him out. Then Shep was majorly short stacked and it took forever, but Tom and I eventually got him out and split the pot. I cannot say there were any amazing plays on my part, but I definitely had Daniel and Shep read on most hands. I'd like to thank Tom and the guys for an absolutely amazing night none of us will forget for a long time.
THE BAD
Well I guess it had to go sour right? The trip to Marietta was a quick one as I hit the road at 12:45 and had to get gas and lunch on the way. I got to Bonnie's at 2:58 and they were waiting to leave for the bridal shower. We got there a few minutes late and got going. Played a couple of games (21 things you might know about the bride and groom) and (make something related to the wedding out of a piece of toliet paper). We ate some food and were going to play one more short game but Granny Bonnie was making faces this whole time and bitched up a storm about people having to leave and we should do gifts. Whatever...so we did gifts. Kelley (and I) got a lot of nice stuff, mostly kitchen stuff such as bar equipment, towels, and a smoothie maker. It was not so bad I guess, but I was th eonly guy in a room full of women (appx 25) and Bonnie kind of ruined the mood by being bitchy the whole time since things did not go as she wanted them to. This is not her wedding.
THE UGLY
Well here we go. So after the bridal shower I go over to Mom's to get a haircut and we have a talk before we go over there. Mom is ABSOLUTELY INSISTING that I bring Kelley over and we talk out the stuff between the two of them that night, including the letter and everything leading up to it (this started in November and ended with the letter in March). I told her I would try my best and got the haircut and left. Dropped off Jon's last stuff at his Mom's as well and good riddance lol. Hopefully he pays me someday soon. I was still kind of ticked off that Mom wanted me to try and force Kelley to talk again...but I figured I would try. Kelley and Kelsey and Bonnie knew someting was up and I spilled before Kelley and I left to see a dog her mom and stepdad had over for the weekend. Kelley strongly refused and we got into a mini-fight over it on the way over to her Mom's. We get to her Mom's and it doesn;t take long for them to realize something is up, but we tell them what it is and move on. We watched King Kong with them and I had not seenit so I enjoyed it. The big dog they were sitting for the weekend was so cute, but too big for our apartment. About 10:30 and 2/3 of the way through the movie my Mom calls their house phone and Bruce hands it to me. This is how the convo goes:
Mom: Why do you not answer your phone when I call (second time she bitched me out for this today)?
Me: Ummm, let me pull out my phone, oh yeah just like I told you before I ge tno bars in half of Marietta!
Mom: Are you guys coming over?
Me after asking Kelley: No we are not coming over.
Mom: Why not?
Me: Because Kelley is not ready to talk.
Mom: That sounds like bullshit.
Me: Well what do you want me to do? You want to talk to her now?
Mom: No (hangs up)
Me: Well Fuck off then (using my better judgment and not throwing Bruce and Kathy's phone across the room).
I was pissy the rest of the movie, and mostly because I DESPISE people hanging up on me rudely. I just refuse to tolerate that bullshit.
So we leave after the movie and we get out to the end of their road and Mom is just pulling on the road. I was so angry I got out of the truck and stormed over to her car window and bitched her out in the middle of the street. I told her it was so rude and you should never hang up on me (with plenty of expletives deleted) and Mom yelled across the road to Kelley who stayed silent and looked ahead in the passenger isde of the truck. Mom accused her of not wanting to work things out and after about a minute I told Mom she could follow us if she wished but I was not talking out there anymore. I sped off and called my grandmother who couldn't console me at all and Kelley took the phone over and talked to her a little bit (which I think helped, but I was sobbing and speeding back to her grandparents). I got to the grandparents, Kelley said she did not want to go there yet, I left the keys in the truck and told her to go wherever she wants but I'm going wherever the hell I feel like and I ran inside right past her grandparents and Kelsey down to my room for the night where I cried and got angrier for 15 minutes alone. I do no know what made me more upset, the fact that my Mom does not understand that I have tried my best to get Kelley to talk for months (and caused many fights in the process), the fact that she stalked us to her grandparents (before we saw her on the road) and then to her mother's, or the fact that I was so consumed with rage I had a white treash screaming match in the middle of the road at night. Probably all of the above. Finally Kelley's grandparents and Kelley came down and tried to console me, which happened after another 15-20 minutes. I haven't cried so much all year I think. After I got back to good they left me and Kelley alone to talk about things and we got on the same page, since it was not us fighting (and we are sure of walking down the aisle and just want it to come...we are fine which is good because if we weren't and all this family stuff was happening...). I finally went upstairs and got some late dinner and watched a litle TV and read a little bit before hitting the sack. Just being with Kelley helped.
Apparently Kelley's grandparents, me in a rage fit in the middle of the road, and Kelley's Mom all told my Mom to back off and let us get married, since nothing good can come from forcing the conversation when both sides are not ready to talk. Kelley's Mom is the only person my mom seems to listen to now so hopefully all of us combined will shut her up. Nonetheless in the long term KElley and I need to have serious talks with her grandparents regarding their unacceptable behavior pertaining to the wedding and my mom on her relationship with Kelley (but we are not going to have these talks till we mov einto our new apartment in August at the earliest). Kelley's Mom told me that my Mom was afraid I wouldn't talk to her anymore since she hung up on me...and she probably deserves that. I intend to talk to her on the phone Wednesday telling her two things: the long term timeline of when we might get together to talk ON OUR TERMS and insisting she comes to the wedding and enjoys what should be a happy day for her.
It scares me that I saw an unpleasant conversation between Kelley's grandmother and my Mom at the end of the bridal shower and I got completely different stories of the conversation from both of them. I cannot trust either of them to give me the full story and that bothers me. It also bothers me that my mom would go so far as to stalk us at night trying to force the issues with Kelley. That is PSYCHOTIC and actually pulled Kelley farther away (as well as gave me something to be really upset at her about). I did a lot better today just chilling with Kelley, and our meeting with Pastor Steve to set up final wedding details turned into a talk about the family issues from Sunday. It helps to talk to him since he is impartial, and I intend to talk to Tom tonight about it and I know Sarah (maid of honor) was going over to talk to Kelley tonight. Back in Columbus now and good riddance to Marietta. I go home for a day and a half and my weekend goes from one of the best of my life to one of the worst.
There you have it...4 days and counting to the wedding and here we go.

World Cup Craziness
I've been so into the World Cup, and I've been cheering for Germany and USA. Germany is 3-0, won their group, and gets a game against sweden in the round of 16 I have to think they will win pretty easily. The US, not so much. Admittedly I think there is NO DOUBT that America was in the group of death (Argentina, Holland, Ivory Coast, and Serbia was supposedly better than Italy, Ghana, Czech and USA: I do not buy it at all after the games are done). Still the effort overall is disappointing and must improve in 4 years if the US is to be respected worldwide.
I post mainly to show you how crazy I got today. I woke up early and instead of going to a bar or to Columbus Crew stadium which is right down the street from me and was apparently having a viewing party (they showed them multiple times during the game...and here's Washington DC in a bar, and here's Times Square, and here's Columbus Crew Stadium!), I decide to bring my TV upstairs and watch both games at the same time from the comfort of home! Yay! I have picture proof.
Beginning of the Game: Hopes are high!

24th Minute: Italy and Czech still playing strong and scoreless, US hopes dashed by mistake and injury to our captain Claudio Reyna (the guy on the ground on the big screen). Bonus picture 2 seconds later of Bruce Arena with his 2006 World Cup face (AKA pissy and disappointed)

27th Minute: Italy and USA get corner kicks almost simultaneously. The US chokes, but Italy converts and all of a sudden spirits are raised for me again. Given Italy's great defense, I assume now the US is in control of their own destiny.

44th Minute: THE US SCORES! GOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Flags waving in Germany, and Columbus Crew Stadium fans a half mile from my seat at home going crazy on national TV. Now Spirits are VERY HIGH...could we actually make it out of the group?

Stoppage Time First Half: More good news as the Czech's get a red card and will be even more unliekly to come back against Italy for even a draw, so the US only needs another goal to win and move on. Then a terrible call against Oneywu since apparently big guys aren't allowed to try for the ball anywhere near the Ghana striker...what bullshit. Ghana drains the penalty kick in the back of the net and the US is in trouble.
Second Half: Here's my only photo, showing Ghana's 2-1 lead in the middle of the half.

This last photo above was right after the US had another great header off the goal post. Just like Reyna's miss off the bar to tie the game against Czech Republic and another miss off the crossbar agaisnt Italy to win the game (as well as Beazley's go-ahead goal against Italy getting called back due to bad positioning by McBride)...4 opportunities off the post in 3 games. Unacceptable. You have to squeak some of those in and each one was critical. Agaisnt the Czechs the game atmosphere would've changed at 1-1, against Italy it would have won the game, and against Ghana 2-2 with 30 minutes left who knows what happens?
So no more USA in the World Cup. Oh well, still lots of good soccer worth watching.
What's more crazy, me dragging my TV upstairs to watch both games at the same time or me taking pictures of it to show you all how crazy I am? I'll call it a push bet, but maybe you could get 6:5 odds.

Grades Are IN!
Had a nice lunch with Mom today, she was in town buying a lavender dress for the wedding. Decided to blow some more time and show her where my new apartment is, before coming back to Moritz. Funny coincidence as I pulled up since Shipman was walking by and my mom wanted to meet him. Now she knows the infamy. I am basicaly on independent study from him for the next week and a half as he wraps up his summer BA class. Yawn. Filling hours.
Oh and grades came out today as expected last week. Con Law was a high B and I tied for the highest grade in Legal Writing, so I MADE JOURNAL....woot. Well at least JDR, and if I get on main journal by the competition so be it (I'm grading around 20-25 percentile approxiamtely so I will not be grading on for sure). I'm actually really happy about my Con Law grade since it was above average and I blew off that class to high heaven. So much so that I went out and bought a supplement before the test to study with, and I think that was desperate. Of course with his exam I think he could've thrown them down the steps to determine grades since we were up all night finishing that beast of a one day take-home. Contracts was awful but since Crandall quit on us and screwed us over on the final I don't really care. A good semester, and now I'm officially a 2L.
My schedule for next year for reference:
FALL
Appellate Advocacy with Beazley - R 9-9:50
Accounting For Lawyers with Shipman - MTW at 2-2:50
Federal Income Taxation with Samansky - MTWR at 3-3:50
Patent Law with Mesher - MW at 4-5:15
Copyright Law with Lee - TR at 4-5:15
WINTER
Business Associations with Cole - MTWR at 10-10:50
Civil Procedure II with Greenbaum - MTW at 11-11:50 (waitlist, but he said I'd probably get in)
Evidence with Simmons - MTWR at 1-1:50
Trademark Law with Lee - TR at 4-5:15
Seminar on State Constitutional Law with Judge Sutton T 5:30-7:30
If I do not get into Civ Pro II, I will hopefully get into Greenbaum's Professional Responsibility course at 2-2:50 MTW. Either works fine and I'm on the waitlist for both, so we'll see which hole in my schedule gets plugged.
Up some more on poker, well above my $450 buy-in total and pretty stable now. So hopefully I keep going up...never hurts to make a little money. The Magic cards haven't been touched all week...better get on those or else I will not be able to Ebay the recent ones before the honeymoon.
Best news of the day: no anxiously awaiting at the mailbox to see if I made a journal. God bless legal writing (at least today).

One More Thing
Oh I wrote another article for southerncollegesports.com this week, and I really crapped it out since it was 3 days behind schedule and I only had an hour to write really. So I crapped out a list of the top 10 stadiums and current college football coaches. I left out Bob Stoops of Oklahoma and Mack Brown of Texas...and I've never had a comment on my articles from readers (I was beginning to wonder if anyone read them). My lack of time and research made the list a little dicey I will admit, but I have gotten a lot of nasty email from readers about leaving those two out. Now I know what it feels like to have readers. I have to admit...it's nice to know I have a readership, and now maybe I'll win them back with a few more good articles lol. Just funny.
Dominos!
I amwatching TV right now, and ESPN just had an hour of the world championship of dominos. I have never seen so much judging and complaining and bitching over a game of dominoes than I saw in the semifinals. It was really funny to watch and I recommend it if you need a laugh. It came on after soccer if you are curious :-)
Had one last (hopefully) moment of doubt before the wedding brought on by Kelley wanting a different ring. We worked out our problems, so no big deal there and we are full speed ahead again one day later. But we are upgrading the ring, and my bank account screams. Thank God people give us money for getting married, since we need to replenish our safety money at least a little before the end of the year. But trading in the old ring set for the gorgeous new one helped a lot and it is affordable.
Law school grades should be done this week, and we got one mroe today. Now law school grades have been a roller coaster ride so far and I have no idea where it will go next. All of my first semester grades were between 93 and 90...above average and very consistent. I got my highest ever law school grade in Legislation (by a small bit), then dropped my Contracts 5 points to a low B (must have really bombed the final), then today got the second highest grade in Property. What makes it all the more sweet is that property is the closest first year field of study to my desired career (intellectual property) and this class was taught by the infamous Shipman, who I am working for this summer. I really wanted to blast this one out of the park and I did, and I'm probably now getting an amazing recommendation letter from my high-profile (in the world of law) boss. Makes my day. so Constitutional Law which I have no idea about and Legal Writing which I think I have a middle range A in...come on down and join the roller coaster ride.
And then we can stop talking about law school grades till at least August, when employers start demanding them.
Was up $50 in poker yesterday too, 20 on the cash tables and won 38 in a 1 dollar buy in tournament (4th place out of 388 players, best ever finish for me online). Of course details are over on my poker blog.

Thank God for Friday
Of course lots has happened since my post-Memorial Day post, but I'll just hit the highlights of thought since I cannot remember most of it.
Today is Ahmad Khan's 25th Birthday. He's an old fart, but should be some fun tonight. Excellent weekend to stay in town. Of course next weekend I'm in town too, I just have to go home for the bridal shower Sunday afternoon.
The World Cup has me enthralled. I watch lots of soccer every day and actually get excited about group play games not involving the US or Germany (although I am cheering for those teams with the roomie). Germany looks very good, but might be tested by England if they meet early in the playoff rounds. The US was easily the only bad team in their group of 4 after being dismissed 3-0 by Czech Republic. Italy did beat Ghana 2-0, but Ghana played TONS better than the US did. It will be quite a task tomorrow for the Americans to get the necessary win against Italy...but I'll hold out hope until they take the pitch. Even if they lose and get knocked out (after playing against Ghana in a then-meaningless game)...I'm still enthralled by the other teams of the World Cup. Gasp...I might just be a soccer fan too.
Speaking of sports, I'm loving the NBA finals too. I've watched the playoffs which have been very rewarding, but the team I'm cheering for (Miami) has made a series of it and who knows they might just run Dallas off the court again in Game 5. I hope so.
The Reds are still in it in June, and actually led the division before their 5 game losing streak this week. As a true Reds fan...we'll see where they are next week lol.
Ben Rothlisburger deserved worse than he got. I mean I wish the guy no ill will and I cheered for the Steelers after they beat Indy last year, but c'mon. You don't wear a helmet and go face-first into a windshield of a car? That guy better stay lucky...but at least he paid the lip service of saying he will wear a helmet now. The fact that PA revoked the law is just simply absurd. Considering how they drive on I-70 across Ohio (the only cars I cannot keep up with basically), I guess they just don't value laws or safety as much as the restof us. If you've ever driven across that behemoth of a boring state, I guess you would understand.
On June 6 (6/6/06 for those living under a rock), I was walking up the street and I hear from a house porch above me..."yeah we tied the knot today." Given that our original date was 7/7/07, I had thought about how many goths would be rushing to the downtown courts to get married on this "historic" day. My thoughts from many months before were rewarded when I looked up on that porch and it was two of the most gothic people I've ever seen talking to some normal looking sun-touched friends. IT MADE MY WEEK! But then it gets better. The bride says in response to the congratulations,"yeah it's really historic because it only happens like, once every millenium." Well call me too smart, but an 06 actually happens every century...and her friends and groom did not say anything other than.."wow it really is monumental." If the original comment made my day, this follow-up about had me rolling up the street to get away before I could bust out laughing. People are dumb and predictable.
So I was browsing the internet today while working, and I think it would be awesome to be a bartender. Not for life (although I bet it's not a bad career), but just as a side job. Too bad I did not have these thoughts 2 years ago...as I might have been more likely to take the 2 week (or 1 week) course and jump into the scene here in Columbus. I certainly see advertisments asking for bartenders often enough. Even if I did not actually decide to become a bartender, I think it would be a fun class to take since it is cheap and a good life skill. Remember, I intend to have a bar at home in my dream house, which may or may not happen. But it would be nice to be able to have people over for drinks and discussion later on. And bartending skills beyond looking in my drink book I have now would be cool to have.
I think everything for the wedding is set, but I like keeping my distance at this point since it seems like the only thing happening is bickering between families and wedding party members. We should have around 200 at the ceremony and 170-175 at the reception, so that should be enough to actually get people to loosen up and dance a little bit. I hate weddings where nobody mingles, and so does Kelley so we set up our reception as an hors-d'oeurve engagement with seating only for about 100 people (assuming people will want to sit while waiting on us to come over while we do pictures at the church). I haven't really had the butterflies yet, but I figure the longer I wait the harder they will come on. Doesn't much matter, as I doubt anything could scare me away from the altar at this point. We've been through thick and thin...and we're still here.
I saw three Mormons with their white button-down shirts, black pants, and black nametags riding down the sidewalk on bikes today. I have a copy of the book of Mormon since I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, but I haven't been in the mood yet to read it all the way through. They are the most irritating people who accost you as you walk on campus. I blew them off the last time I saw them...but I usually like to mess with them when I have time to talk. What bothered me was that they always travel in packs (and apparently don't believe in cars), they are always guys (why?), and they are riding on bikes down the sidewalk. I think bikers shouldn't get to hold up cars on the highway AND run over people on sidewalks...but this happens every day around here. One or the other. My opinion like the law...they should be on the road. I can deal with them easier there since in a head on collision I win. At least they were all wearing helmets...so perhaps they don't have the same level of faith as Ben Rothlisburger that God will save them if they run into a car or pedestrian.
It felt so good to play tennis last night. I should never let myself lapse, as I am a pretty decent player when in practice (and I'm not even close to where I was in high school). I got the roomie down 4-1 last night before forgetting how to keep my passing shots in the court...dropping two breaks back and losing the set 4-6.
This weekend is the Pro Tour for teams in Charleston SC. I am cheering for the three teams who beat us for qualifications this past season (well not really for the sucky team from Chicago who we would beat 8-9 times out of 10) to make a good showing, and our playtest partners started 4-0 while the other two teams are 3-1 and 2-2. None out of contention, and our playtest buddies are doing very well, seeing the second day of a Pro Tour for sure at this point. I cannot help but be a little bitter though, since they are our playtest friends and we wouldbe playing the same set of decks as them and probably would be 4-0 or 3-1 right now. Maybe next year :-)
In other Magic news, I've put together the cards and decks I am keeping finally and am now sorting through the collection for rares to put up on ebay. What a task, but it's three and a half more plastic storage boxes to use for something else later on lol. I hope this frees up more time for poker and other things I want to do. Ah speaking of, I need to put a new entry on my poker blog for the live game we played. Maybe I'll go do that and stop filling this blog with useless thoughts.
One more: what the hell takes law professors so long to get grades in? A lot of graduating 3L's are complaining because one seminar is holding up their final transcripts, but our class is apparently the unlucky one. All the other sections (2/3 of the 1L class) now have all their grades in. Section 1/2...oh no. We just got our Contracts grade in which the final was 3 months ago today (obviously the last of the 3 sections), we are the only section without Constitutional Law grades and Property grades, and half of our section (since we were split) still has no Legislation grades while the other half doesn't have Legal Writing (all other sections of Legislation and Legal Writing are in). So we all have 2 grades (half of us Legislation and Contracts, the other half hae Legal Writing and Contracts), while the rest of the class has had their grades for over a week now. The registrar said all three of the classes I am waiting on (Legal Writing, Con Law, and Property) have been submitted as raw scores and are either currently being converted to the scale they use to grade us or are awaiting professor and dean approval before they are released. If we don't have all three of those grades by Wednesday...I'm going to throw a fit. Get it together people.
